The Gig economy: prospects in East Africa

The Gig Economy quickly taking off or has taken off in most markets. Generally, the gig economy comprises of freelance work mainly offered by independent contractors rather than employees. Common gigs include, working as an Uber driver, delivering of food/goods through online platforms, freelance writing, among others.

The unique aspects of the region will come into play in the growth of the gig economy in East Africa . The unique aspects include, culture, attitudes towards formal and informal work, availability of internet, and level of digital skills.
